Last night, the Royal Free Hospital in London confirmed that Pauline Cafferkey, the Ebola nurse, is now ‘critically ill’ with Ebola.

Ms Cafferkey was readmitted to a specialist isolation unit last week and ever since, her condition has deteriorated.

It was only last year when the 39-year-old contracted Ebola after working at a treatment centre in Sierra Leone. Ms Cafferkey was flown back to the UK in a military plane and isolated for a month in the same hospital she finds herself in now.

Reports now say that anyone who has been in close contact with Ms Cafferkey has been vaccinated.

It has been known for some time by scientists that the Ebola virus can harbour in cells for months after the person appears to have fully recovered.

The statement from the hospital said: “We are sad to announce that Pauline Cafferkey’s condition has deteriorated and she is now critically ill. She is being treated for Ebola in the high level isolation unit in the Royal Free Hospital.”
