England in the Final?

England are in the final of Euro 2016! 

Crack open the champagne and start dancing on the tables – it’s time to celebrate…

Actually, I realise that may be slightly misleading. The England team haven’t reached the final, but an English referee has.

UEFA has announced that Mark Clattenburg, who hails from County Durham and is now based in Gosforth, will take charge of the final clash of the tournament between France and Portugal. After being entrusted as the referee for both the FA Cup final in May and the Champions League final just a week later, his latest refereeing honour should top off a remarkable couple of months for Clattenburg. What is even more remarkable is that five out of the seven officials for the final are English, showing that although we may not be very good at scoring penalties, we’re rather good at handing them out…

Some of you may remember Howard Webb’s appearance as the referee in charge of the World Cup final, in which he distributed a record 14 yellow cards in a game marred by foul play and petty insults from the players and managers alike.

Let’s hope our Geordie referee doesn’t get such a hard time…
