England were rewarded with a 2-0 win in the opening game of the Euro 2016 qualifier last night in Switzerland. Danny Welbeck scoring his first international goal since September last year against Moldova. Welbeck scored the opening goal in the 58th minute and a later goal to secure England’s lead in the 90th minute.

Roy Hodgson approached this game a little differently than any other matches, as England desperately needed to impress after such a disappointing World Cup. The England boss played a new formation which required a diamond in midfield with two of his most talented players playing at the base of the diamond and the top of the diamond. This new formation proved to be working at half time with 50% more chances on goal than England’s previous game.

After the 2-0 win away to Switzerland, Hodgson punched the air with delight and perhaps with relief as England begin to put right their many mistakes of the summer. The stats however at the end of the game showed that Switzerland did have more possession throughout the game, so England do still have a lot to improve on despite the score.

England face off against  San Marino at home to hopefully secure them a spot in the Euro 2016.
