Feminists Protest at Suffragette Premiere

8 October 2015

Over one hundred protesters jumped barriers onto the red carpet at the premiere of Suffragette in Leicester Square.

Women from the domestic violence group Sisters Uncut were seen being physically carried away and pushed back behind barriers while green and purple smoke bombs clouded the air outside of the Odeon cinema.

Sisters Uncut campaign against domestic violence and this particular protest was to bring attention to the recent cuts to domestic violence services. The activist group use the slogan, ‘safety is a right not a privilege’ – a message that they hoped to carry with them at the premiere last night.

One domestic violence survivor and Sisters Uncut activist, Angie Johnson, said: “My life was saved by specialist services and we must fight every step of the way to make sure all women can access them.”

While the protest led to the premiere running fifteen minutes late, police involvement and more barriers brought in, Helena Bonham Carter – one of the stars of the film – said that it was the “perfect” response to the film.

Suffragette is released in the UK on 12th October
