The highly anticipated Eternals film has just been released this November. Starring Richard Madden, Gemma Chan and Angelina Jolie, this new addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe gives us an additional team of heroes to fall in love with.

The Eternals are a race of immortal beings with superhuman powers. They have secretly lived on Earth for thousands of years after defeating the remaining deviants. In efforts to hide their past lives as unworldly superheroes, they attempt to blend into the twenty-first century.

However, after a drastic turn of events, they must reunite in order to defeat the return of the evil deviants.

An unbelievable aspect to this film was the fact that despite the addition of a whole new cast, the elements that usually make up a Marvel film still remained. For example, humour was seamlessly embedded throughout.

Despite the hilarious jokes coming from unfamiliar characters, Eternals certainly did not lose the comedic element that every Marvel film consists of. Even though this film did not see the return of any recent heroes (such as Loki or Doctor Strange), it did not feel as though it was a new project. It was, in fact, extremely homely and comforting.

A debatable aspect of this film was the largely anticipated ‘love scene’. It took place regularly early in the film and occurred after Ikaris’ declaration of love to Sersi.

It was extremely brief yet was necessary as it highlighted their unbreakable connection. Personally, I think that this strengthened the film as it demonstrated the true love that Ikaris and Sersi have for one another; however, this matter is certainly up for debate amongst viewers.

Despite the many positives, one of the biggest issues that has been raised with Eternals is the fact that it is a whopping 2 hours and 37 minutes long. Even though the entirety of the film was highly entertaining and enjoyable, it did feel slightly rushed in places. The first hour of the film consists of a major information dump.

By the end, you could potentially find yourself feeling unsatisfied due to the lack of clarity.

I think that the 2021 Eternal’s movie certainly did not disappoint due to the excellent introduction of various new characters and maintained continuity of traditional Marvel aspects. This was certainly a good addition to phase four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
