Before the term was coined, FPSs were known as Doom clones. Then the genre began to grow, and envelop multiple types of game play elements. From RPG elements like Fallout and Borderlands, to heavy story elements like the Bioshock series, or Deus Ex, here are the five must-play FPS games as of 2016.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution:

A brilliantly constructed game, with multiple levels of story and combat. Play as a ruthless killer, storming every encounter you come across, or stay silent and plan your attacks. Every decision counts, small or large. If you kill, people will know. Enemies will talk of your deeds, and reinforce to compensate. Lots of replay value, and some really cool animations and takedowns.

Metro: 2033 & Last Light:

Based on the works of Dmitry Glukhovsky, the Metro series is set in Russia, after a nuclear fallout. Creatures roam the cities above, while mankind is doomed to live below, in the metro tunnels. Re-released as Redux, the games were given a graphical make-over, making them visually stunning, and even more atmospheric. The story is an oddity. Because you’re really not sure whose side you’re supposed to be on…

Dishonored:

After being framed for the assassination of your empress, you must choose whether to become the cold-blooded killer everyone has you pinned as, or take non-lethal approaches to the tasks at hand. This is one of those rare games where you can literally go through without killing anyone. You never have to wet your blade or fire a single crossbow bolt. You can walk through as a ghost, only doing what is needed. A rare, and captivating world. One we will revisit this year in Dishonored 2.

Bioshock Series:

Its first release in 2008 was a rather niche game, blending dystopia, a rich story, and decent combat mechanics. The series then branched into two other games. The second simply entitled Bioshock 2, and the most recent was Infinite. The series holds a special place in my heart as one of the first real ‘horror’ games I played. From bumbling through the fictional underwater city of Rapture in the first game, to the power of being a Big Daddy in 2, or the vast sprawling city of Columbia in Infinite, it’s a must have for every FPS fanatic.

Wolfenstein: The New Order:

Probably the best shooter to come out of 2014, this alternate universe shooter was a blast to play from start to finish. With a surprisingly good story, and some really cool mechanics, this game was a delight to play. There’s nothing quite like dual wielding assault rifles, and mowing down swathes of Nazis. In this reality, the Nazis won WW2, and have advanced in technology tenfold (which would explain the trip to the moon you take about two-thirds of the way through the game). A brilliant FPS, and one everyone should play.

There we have it: five exceedingly good games and then some!
