Gateshead Council has become the first in the region to exercise new powers given by Public Space Protection orders in order to keep motorcyclists off a public bridleway.

Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs) were introduced last year with the aim of cracking down on anti-social behaviour in certain areas. Gateshead Council is the first in the North East to introduce one of them, in the area of Kibblesworth near Birtley in South Gateshead.

Northumbria Police said that since the start of the year they had received 82 reports of “motorcycle disorder” in the Birtley and Kibblesworth area, something which the order seeks to deal with. The PSPO can be enforced by police officers, community support officers and council officers, and can result in an on-the-spot fine of £100 or £1,000 on prosecution. Offenders will also be removed from the area.

Insp Mick Robinson said that Northumbria Police hope that the order will “significantly disrupt offending riders” and protect the residents of the area from the problem in the future.
