International bank Santander has chosen results day to release the findings of a survey that is likely to massively disappoint thousands of GCSE students and/or relieve them of their naivety.

The survey revealed that British sixteen-year-olds believe that they will be earning £90,000 per year at the most successful point of their careers. One in five current GCSE students estimates that one day, they will be earning £100,000 per year. Seeing as the average salary in the UK is £26,500 per year, today’s students are clearly aiming very, very high.

One third of these students said that the most important factor to them when deciding on a career path is money. The careers that most students wanted to follow were typically in medicine and healthcare, then IT and accounting.

Hopefully, they will all be able to reach their goals but this would be easier if their goals were even mildly realistic.
