Author of the esteemed Game of Thrones books, George RR Martin has delayed the next book in the series to release an ‘imaginary history’, of the house of Targaryens. Martin revealed that The Winds of Winter wouldn’t be coming in 2018.

The last book that was released was A Dance with Dragons, in 2011. This isn’t the first time the author has delayed the book, stating he has missed multiple deadlines with the work. But, at least he will have some content out this year.

The latest season of the show saw record high numbers of viewership. We have to wait until 2019 to see what happens next.

In a press release on Entertainment Weekly, Martin wrote:

Fire and Blood is not a novel. This is not a traditional narrative and was never intended to be… let’s call this one ‘imaginary history’ instead. The essential point being the ‘history’ part. I love reading popular histories myself, and that’s what I was aiming for here.’

Even so, he adds that ‘there are enough stories here for twenty novels’. Hopefully, he doesn’t plan on writing those before the next book in the series. He has stated that he will not be turning his attention to The Winds of Winter.

Fire and Blood will be set 300 years before A Song of Ice and Fire series and will look at the history of House Targaryen and its place in Westeros.

Who knows, it could end up being one of the spin-offs that HBO plan on making.
