After the England womens rugby team were named Team of the Year for 2014 by the Sunday Times and Sky Sports Women of the Year Awards, the change in attitude towards women’s sport has been phenomenal.

This has been shown by the amount of tickets sold for the England women’s football friendly, taking place at Wembley against Germany on Sunday. The girls will be playing in front of a 55,000 crowd this weekend, outdoing their male counterparts when they played Norway at the national stadium earlier this season.

 

Here are five familiar faces you may recognise is women’s football today:

Steph Houghton

Steph Houghton is an English  female international footballer, who plays for Manchester City ladies in the FA WSL. Since her debut in 2007 Steph has played over 40 times for England.

 

Jill Scott

Jill Scott is an English female footballer who currently plays centre midfield for England and Manchester City. Scott was voted 2008 FA Players’ Player of the Year and 2011 FA International Player of the Year.

 

Eniola Aluko

Eniola Aluko is an English female footballer who plays for Chelsea FC in the FA WSL. She moved to Birmingham with her family at the age of one, since she grew up in England she chose to represent England at an international level.

 
Kelly Smith

Kelly Smith is an female English football forward for Arsenal Ladies. She has over 100 caps for England’s International team since making her debut in 1995.

 

Rachel Yankey

Rachel Yankey is an English Footballer who plays for the English FA WSL club, Arsenal and for the England National team.

Since making her debut in 1997, Yankey has appeared 129 times for England and is the most capped player for the home team.
