Happy Birthday Twitter!

Yes, Twitter: the proverbial playground of 140 characters or less. The social network turns 10 today, and it’s safe to say that throughout its seemingly omnipotent life, we’ve seen some of the best (and the worst) the world has to offer from just tweets alone.

Twitter is like Facebook, but for fast people. Started in 2006, founders Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams, Biz Stone, and Noah Glass had an idea that would revolutionise how we interact with friends, co-workers, and even celebrities.

However, this has not been without consequence.

Many believe that through Twitter they are untouchable. Remember James Arthur? That whole thing? Thought he was okay on the X-Factor but turned out to be a massive douche? Yeah, him.

From homophobic slurs to just plain being offensive about people’s sexual behaviour, he used his Twitter handle to abuse fellow artists and ended up a black mark on Simon Cowell’s list.

But Twitter is also a gold mine for hilarity and chaos.

Remember when Kim K tried to ‘break the internet’ with her photoshopped butt?

Yep.

Or literally anything from Jaden Smith’s Twitter.

But we’ve also suffered through worse. When actor Paul Walker crashed his Porsche while speeding, and Twitter exploded with the hashtag #rippaulwalker. Okay, we got it. The guy died. It was sad. Honestly, if he had died at any other time then the uproar might have been justified.

But the fact that Nelson Mandela died not two weeks afterwards, and the outcry that should have followed was lessened by the death of a celebrity.

So yes. Happy birthday Twitter – here’s to another ten years of hilarity, Kim K trying to wow us all with her behind, and Kanye West… well… being Kanye West.
