Hot on your heels

Controversy has surrounded the recent Cannes Film Festival after it emerged that women were turned away from prestigious screenings for not wearing heels.
The festival, which runs annually in May, has come under fire due to its dress rules, despite the fact that the rule banning flat shoes was supposedly disbanded for this year’s festival and that festival ushers were advised as such.
But controversy has truly erupted with reports that a Danish film producer with a partially-amputated foot was refused entry to a screening in flats, despite the fact that she could not maintain her balance wearing heels. The international film community has risen up in defence of the right of women to wear whichever shoes they wish, and while they protest their ignorance it seems as though the Cannes administration has some explaining to do.
