Who doesn’t love a trip to IKEA? Sneaking through all the little alleyways, finding your ideal bedroom, and pretending that you’ve just bought a brand new house – it’s a place of dreams!

However, for many of us, it can be quite a trek to get to your nearest shop. So, you’ll be pleased to know that the company are experimenting with selling its furniture through online retailers in the hope of becoming more accessible to shoppers.

As well as this, the chain is looking into developing a smaller city centre store format, as well as order and pick-up points, and standalone kitchen showrooms.

Though the company has not stated which third-party sites will be involved in this development, it has been claimed that Amazon and Alibaba are likely options.

Torbjörn Lööf, chief executive of Inter Ikea, told the Financial Times it was “the biggest development in how consumers meet Ikea since the concept was founded. We want to learn … we want to find out how we could keep our identity on a third-party platform.”

Over the next year, 22 new stores are expected to open in countries across the world, including India and Latvia, potentially leading to an even greater turnover than its 5% growth over the last 12 months.

We’re excited. Are you?
