To celebrate International Women’s Day we are taking a look at ten women who have had a huge impact on the world in one way or another. From politicians to media moguls to singers to athletes, women inspire us constantly. Women may have been granted the vote just over one hundred years ago but we are a long way off equality for women, but each of these featured icons have aided the steps women take each and every day, in one way or another.
The Queen – The Queen is the longest serving British Monarch and as well as being the Queen of 16 states in the Commonwealth, she is also Patron to over 600 charities and organisations.
Dame Kelly Holmes – The Olympic athlete joined the army when she was 18 and has gone on to found the DKH legacy trust, a registered charity to support young athletes and help the lives of young people across the UK.
JK Rowling – The revered authoress went from being unemployed and living on benefits to becoming a multi – millionaire in just five years. She was diagnosed with clinical depression which gave her the inspiration to create the Dementors in the Potter series.
Oprah Winfrey – As North America’s only black billionaire Oprah Winfrey, a victim of sex abuse as a child was able to bring more attention to the issue through her show and her public speaking.
Hilary Clinton – Having stood by her man as First Lady, Hilary Clinton has had her eye on becoming the first female President of the United States and is tipped as the Democratic favourite for leading the party in the 2016 election.
Angela Merkel– The first German Female Chancellor and the first post reunification leader to be raised in former communist East Germany who was raised by her sister and brother.
Dame Helen Mirren – She has portrayed three British Queen’s in different films and television series and has won an Academy award for best actress, four BAFTAS, three golden globes, four Grammy Awards and two Cannes Film Festival Best Actress Awards.
Alexandra Shulman – didn’t want to become a journalist like her parents and wanted to become a hairdresser but has eventually become the longest serving Editor of British Vogue, having take over in 1992.
Melinda Gates – Having met her husband while working at Microsoft, Melinda eventually left to raise their family and throw herself into the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which the couple have donated $30 billion to.
Adele – Was raised by a single mother and had an obsession with singing from the age of four. The Spice Girls and Pink influenced her career and she secured a recording contract when her friend posted her demo on MySpace.
