Katy Perry has said she is a ‘victim’ of social media, due to society’s pressure to share everything online.

The singer and upcoming American Idol judge, says that Instagram and Twitter are contributing to the ‘decline of civilisation’. Which is a bit of an overstatement. She also encouraged her fans to not care about social media and to live their lives as they see fit.

Perry has over 68 million followers on Instagram and 108 million on Twitter. She said she would rather not document her whole life online, however.

Many celebs, now including Katy Perry, have warned fans about the dangers of social media.

‘It’s hard because I’d rather not care about that and just live my life.’

She claimed it was ‘not good for us as a society’ to show her ‘[buying] clothing and products or pose a certain way’. The 33-year-old said she is trying to balance posts online, as she is just as susceptible to pressure as anyone else.

She isn’t the first star to speak out about the negativity surrounding social media. Selena Gomez is the most followed person on Instagram and apparently ‘freaked out’ when she learned this fact.

Bieber has also quit the platform for months at a time after people began bullying his girlfriend on the platform. Star Wars actress Daisy Ridley deleted her Instagram too. When speaking to Radio Times, she explained herself:

‘The more I read about teenage anxiety, the more I think it’s highly unhealthy for people’s mental health. It’s such a weird thing for young people to look at distorted images of things they should be.’

Ed Sheeran claimed he was done with social media platforms between his second and third albums, claiming he was living through his phone.

‘I find myself seeing the world through a screen and not my eyes so I’m taking this opportunity of me not having to be anywhere or do anything to travel the world and see everything I missed.’

Katy Perry was in ‘tough’ talks with her record label after disappointing sales on her last album Witness.
