The inevitable has happened folks, the Kinect has gone the way of the dodo. Microsoft is discontinuing its adapters for the device as of this week.

After initially selling millions of units for the Xbox 360 and Xbox One, the Kinect has seen better days. Games are seldom released on the platform nowadays and the games that were left much to be desired. Microsoft has officially confirmed it will be discontinuing the Kinect adapter for the newest Xbox consoles.

A spokesperson said, in a statement to Polygon:

‘After careful consideration, we decided to stop manufacturing the Xbox Kinect Adapter to focus attention on launching new, higher fan-requested gaming accessories across Xbox One and Windows 10.’

Underused and not very good – the Kinect in a nutshell.

The representative declined to say whether the company would bring the platform back. The adapter will be no longer available for purchase.

It’s no surprise, given that in 2017 the device’s camera was discontinued also.

Originally launched partway through the 360’s life, it was host to many bestselling games, including Dance Central. Microsoft decided to then make it a mandatory part of the Xbox One package, driving the launch console up to around £400.

It was later made optional, bringing the price down slightly. This had a wider appeal, as very few Xbox users still use the movement focused device.

But, due to the lack of titles and functionality of the device, it was shortly abandoned by developers and left behind. Here’s a test, name the last big title you saw on Kinect.

Exactly.
