Lewis Hamilton won the BBC Sports Personality of theYear on Sunday night after receiving almost 210,000 votes from the British public, who determine the winner. The competition was the tightest its ever been with runner up Rory Mcllroy receiving 20% of the votes and distance runner Jo Pavey coming in third with 16% of the total votes cast.

The 29 year old Formula 1 man is currently the most successful British driver in history with 33 victories, two more than double sports personality winner Nigel Mansell.

Lewis was completely shocked and overwhelmed by this achievement, as he thought Irish Golfer Rory had it in the bag.

Hamilton has been runner up at the competition twice before, in 2007 and 2008 when he lost out to Calzaghe and Sir Chris Hoye.

The other winners were:

Team of the Year: England’s Womens rugby union team
Overseas Sports Personality of the Year: Cristiano Ronalo (Footballer)
Young Personality of the Year: Claudia Fragapane (Gymnast)
Lifetime achievement Award: Sir Chris Hoy (6 time gold medal winner)
Helen Rollason Award: The Invictus games competitors.
Sports Unsung Hero: Jill Stidever, after spending nearly 60 years teaching thousqands of kids with special needs to swim.
