Live Review: Nick Mulvey

The last time Nick Mulvey took to the stage in Gateshead was just over a year ago, when in Hall One at the iconic Sage he supported Laura Marling. Looking back at the promotional material for that night, the Sage managed to spell Nick’s name wrong, but this time around, there wasn’t a typo to be seen. He is now worthy of having his name presented correctly  it would appear

Last night, Hall Two was totally in awe of the Mercury nominated Mulvey as he serenaded us with tracks from his debut album First Mind, all the while educating us on just how his fingers can deftly seduce a constant rotation of acoustic guitars. Flanked by an impressive band boasting an exuberant bass player, a delicate percussionist and various others, Mulvey entertained the crowd for over 90 minutes, allowing fans old and new to embark on a musical voyage of his musical catalogue. He returned to the stage after the crowd refused to leave to perform his cover of Drake’s ‘Hold On, We’re Going Home’ much to the appreciation of the diverse audience and those keen followers of Radio 1’s Live Lounge.

The joy of Nick Mulvey is undoubtedly his understated talent, as he is potentially to folk music what Jose Feliciano is to Latin pop, as he plays the guitar with such finesse and ease all the while allowing you to share a certain intimacy through his lyrical prowess. If the Mercury Prize could incorporate live performance, last night would have seen the ‘Fever to the Form’ singer kick the competition into touch.
