Marriage Rights

7 July 2015

By now, if you haven’t heard about the legalisation of same-sex marriage across all 50 states in the US, where have you been? It’s been all over our snapchat stories and the hastag #lovewins was coined and trended worldwide. The White House even had it’s own makeover, transforming from white to multicoloured.

On June 26th 2015, the US Supreme Court gave same-sex couples the right to marry in all 50 US states. Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy stated “The Court, in this decision, holds same-sex couples may exercise the fundamental right to marry in all States.” Over the 4th of July weekend the celebrations continued, with many people purchasing more of the gay pride confederate flags than the traditional Old Glory flags. The celebrations were the most joyous yet for those in the LGBTQ community, possessing one more basic human right than they did last year. In the UK, the Northern Pride will be taking place from the 17th to the 19th of July this year and no doubt, just like America, this will also be a thoroughly enjoyable experience for all involved.

Hopefully developments will be made stemming from the US being the most populous country to legalise same-sex marriage; the USA being one of the first domino in a long line waiting for this change. Hopefully we’ll see a world where the new generation of LGBTQ youth will have no knowledge or experience of a country in which their marriage is disallowed.
