After a woman in California won a legal battle with Microsoft over an unauthorised update to Windows 10, the company is updating (ha, pun) the way it goes about informing consumers about Windows 10.

In the past few months, in order to prompt PC users into using their newer OS, they may have gotten away with some rather sneaky stuff. Including a confusing and ‘back-door’ update route so to speak. Users of Windows 8 or 7 were presented with this:

And even if you closed the window, the update was still scheduled.

There are a number of users who have had their computers compromised due to the unknown update, and have lost countless hours of work. Microsoft, in a press release, has said that their update terms were confusing and misleading.

As of now, over 300 million machines are running on Windows 10, and it looks as if they’re hanging up the goal of one billion in favour of customer loyalty.

Microsoft will, however, continue to urge consumers to upgrade before the free period expires next month.
