Labour MP Helen Goodman has apologised after she sent out a tweet about Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt’s Chinese wife.

The former Shadow Minister took to Twitter to ask: “If China is so great, why did @Jeremy_Hunt’s wife come to England?”, causing outrage within the Labour Party and from other politicians.

One Conservative MP, Nadhim Zahawi, asked if Ms Goodman’s account had been hacked, writing: “Helen that is a terrible thing so say. I hope you delete and apologise to Mrs Hunt.”

Ms Goodman’s comments come after the Health Secretary claimed that Britain should be as hard-working as Asia earlier this month. Hunt said that even though cuts to tax credits will make millions worse off, they send out the right “cultural sign” to those in lower paid jobs when combined with a higher minimum wage.

Issuing an apology on Twitter (after the comment was deleted), Ms Goodman wrote: “Wish to absolutely totally apologise for earlier tweet.”

Since the incident, the Labour Party have said the tweet did not represent its views and that the Bishop Auckland MP would be reminded of her responsibilities.
