Newcastle United; Local Hero

Every Newcastle United match-goer will be familiar with the jazzy saxophone instrumental music that ushers the players onto the field at the start of every match day. The more diligent – and particularly the older (and wiser!) – fans amongst us will be able to tell us everything that it is possible to know about the Geordie anthem, but for those of you who don’t know the details: you better listen up!

The iconic tune was originally written for the 1983 comedy-drama Local Hero, which tells the tale of an American oil company representative sent to live in a small western Scottish village where he has been instructed to purchase the town and its surrounding property for his company. The soundtrack is written by Mark Knopfler, the co-founder of the band ‘Dire Straits’ who disbanded in 1995 and whose repertoire includes ‘Brothers in arms’ and the love song ‘Romeo and Juliet’. Although he was born in Glasgow (quite far from Geordieland) he moved down to Newcastle as a child and attended Gosforth Grammar School. Today he is seen as part of an elite group of legendary Geordies and his spine-tingling, infectious tunes fill St James’ Park.
