New figures have revealed that the number of people failing to attend hospital appointments in the north east have hit their highest levels in six years, costing the NHS trusts millions.

The number of patients failing to turn up for pre-arranged admissions is up from 5,445 occasions t0 6,382 in the following year during 2014/15. South Tyneside, Sunderland, Northumberland and County Durham hospital trusts have also admitted to seeing the number of patients failing to attend at their highest since 2010.

A shocking 28,318 appointments were missed at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals Trust, equating to every one in twelve appointments, meaning that the numbers are up 7.3% from the year before.

Numbers of failed admissions in Gateshead are also up 42% from 41 to 58, with a comment from the QE Gateshead confirming the figures: “It’s always disappointing when patients do not attend their appointments without giving us any notice. It’s a waste of both time and resources because any patient who fails to attend their appointment causes a gap in the schedule that we could have allocated to someone else.”
