Dyson has recently revealed its first personal care product: a hairdryer that’s quieter and less damaging to hair than a conventional hairdryer. The price currently stands at £299.

This will be Dyson’s first hairdryer, using the same airflow technology as features in their hoovers, powered by a miniaturised air pump in the handle.

The company has said it invested £50m in the development of the product, but many would be put off by the hefty price tag.

Dyson is best known for the revolutionary cyclone technology in its products. From bagless to wireless and handheld hoovers, Dyson has over 40 products in production. The company sold approximately £1.7bn worth of products last year.

Sir James Dyson said developing a hairdryer was ‘obvious’.

“We make very high speed motors… so it’s rather obvious that we would carry on and use that in everything involved in airflow.”

The company said it had invested the £50m investigating the ‘limitations’ of conventional hairdryers. The biggest limitation they found, which was highlighted by Sir James, was styling attachments and proximity to hair slowing airflow. This left hair damaged and overheated.

The haircare product will be mainly targeted at consumers, but will also aim for professionals. Sir James claimed it was more important to satisfy customers than to appeal to a wide audience.
