Packed Lunch Crack Down

Anyone here remember turkey Twizzlers? Those weirdly amazingly tasting, yet horribly unhealthy processed meat swirls? I miss those.

Speaking of banned school foods, sausage rolls are now no longer allowed to be put into packed lunches, a move that has divided opinion when it comes to parents. Shirley Manor Primary Academy in Bradford has banned ‘unhealthy’ foods such as sausage rolls, pork pies, pepperoni sticks. Even going so far as to ban fruit squash and flavoured water.

The schools reasoning is it wants to promote a balanced diet and these foods have a lot of salt and saturated fat. This is no secret, however, some parents have been ‘furious’ at the decision.

One parent said his son’s sausage roll had been taken off him and was instead given a ham sandwich.

‘He was given a ham sandwich instead but hates ham so there’s no way he was going to eat it. He ended up eating a dry crisp sandwich. How is that any healthier?’

There are two sides to the argument, however.

While it is up to parents to decide what is suitable for their children to eat and what isn’t, banning unhealthy foods encourages parents to find healthier alternatives, which is incredibly important. Given how childhood obesity is at an all-time high, there does need to be some intervention somewhere.

Then there’s me.
