A cross-agency plan to cut antisocial behaviour in Lemington has met with huge success, Northumbria Police says.

Operation Unity, which was carried out by the police service’s North Neighbourhood Policing Team working with Newcastle City Council and Your Homes Newcastle, a company which manages council housing on behalf of local authorities, as well as local schools and youth groups, has seen disorder in the area drop by almost 70 percent.

The work undertaken as part of the operation included the effective use of CCTV in public areas, as well as partnership work with local residents and ‘problem pupils’ in schools, and the creation of new local activities for youths to get involved in.

The operation resulted from a number of issues raised with local councillors and Cllr Barry Phillipson, who represents Lemington ward, said: “Operation Unity is a good example of what multi-agency working can achieve … the response and commitment from all agencies to resolve these problems was fantastic.”

But the work doesn’t stop there: policing surgeries and community meetings will continue in Lemington every other Thursday. Details can be found on the Northumbria Police website.
