With Derby day around the corner this week we focus on Sunderland and Newcastle’s defeats on the weekend.

Newcastle United finished Sunday’s game with 10 men after captain Fabio Coloccini was sent off after a dangerous tackle on Everton’s Aaron Lennon.

James McCarthy put Everton in front opening the game up in the 20th minute when he placed a low shot past Tim Krul. Lukaku doubled the blue’s lead with a penalty after Lennon was fouled by Yohan Gouffran. Ross Barkley finished United off in stoppage time with a cool finish giving him his second goal of the season.

After Everton secured all three points they have moved clear of the relegation zone leaving them in 14th place with 31 points. Newcastle remain in 11th with 35 points.

Sunderland’s day wasn’t any better in fact it was slightly worse conceding an extra goal against Aston Villa at their home ground.

Villa were better in every area on the day so it was no wonder they walked away with the three points. Both of Sunderland’s centre backs failed to perform, letting Villa take advantage and score four goals in the first half. Sunderland’s defeat was embarrassing especially when they were playing in front of the biggest crowd of the season.

After Gus Poyet’s side was unable to gain any points in the weekend’s game they now remain in 17th place only one point ahead of of 18th place Burnely. Aston Villa now remain one point above Sunderland.
