If you’re an A-level student, you’ll be very aware that results day is fast approaching. This could be the moment that determines whether or not you get into university, you progress into an apprenticeship, or which kind of job you get. So, there is no doubt that it is probably going to be a particularly scary day, but that can be made slightly easier by preparing for it a little bit. Here’s a quick round-up of the most important things you need to know if you are waiting on results to determine a place at university.

What time will UCAS update?

There are many myths about UCAS updating early, whether that is at midnight on results day, or at 6am. However, these just aren’t true. The official time that UCAS re-opens its servers is at 8am on Thursday 18th August, and you will be able to check to see if your place has been confirmed then. However, be prepared before the big day – remember your username and password so that you can access the site straight away.

How do I know if I have received my place at University?

If you have accepted a conditional offer at a university, this will change to unconditional on results day if you have been successful at meeting your grades. Remember, UCAS will not tell you what grades you actually achieved, so you will still need to go into school to collect your results.

What is clearing?

If you don’t receive your firm choice, and you also don’t meet the conditions for your insurance, you will enter into clearing. You will know that this has happened if both of your choices flag up as unsuccessful. This is a system whereby you can contact other universities and request a place on their course, whether you have met the requirements they initially asked for or not. To make things even easier, the Telegraph have even created an app. If you have missed your firm or insurance choice by just a few marks, you may want to try contacting the university and seeing if they can do anything for you; it’s definitely worth a try. So, make sure you have the admissions number ready, just in case.

What do I need with me?

  • Your phone – so you can contact universities, if necessary.
  • Your UCAS Track log in details.
  • Some paper and a pen to make any notes while you are on the phone to a university.

Most importantly, don’t panic. Of course, you are probably going to be feeling a little bit anxious and stressed in the run up to the big day, but you can only do your best. Good luck!
