Retro Review: “7” by S Club 7

Now just what happened in 2000? Behind the end of Y2K worries and your faithful correspondent’s birth, by far the most important event was the release of one of the albums which would typify the overlap between two decades. “7” was many things – a UK number one, a certified four-times-platinum album and the home of the immortal track “Reach”, to name but a few.

“Reach”, of course, is the song which most people remember from the album, and its long legacy is if nothing else a testament to its get-up-and-go catchiness. “Bring the House Down”, too, is an impressive little pop number.

However, this is where the quality tracks on the album end. With the later songs all kinds of genres are introduced, from proto-R’n’B to the ‘stab-at-dramatic’ that is the 2000 Children in Need single, “Never Had a Dream Come True”. In the end, “7” just ends up trying to be everything to too many people, and the clear (if slightly vapid) style which comes with “Reach” is rapidly thrown out of the window in a flurry of all-too-sensitive ballads and cringeworthy beats.

“7” was many things, but an all-round good album it was not.
