Doctor Foster is a new drama series that has had the nation on the edge of their seats for the past few weeks. When a local GP suspects that her husband is having an affair, a whirlwind of emotions kicks in – a process of mental heartache and trauma that will undoubtedly leave you in complete shock. Be warned, this review does contain many spoilers!

Gemma Foster seems to live the perfect life. She has a handsome husband, a well-paid job and a son, along with a big house and car – what more could you possibly want? Well, things start to fall apart when she discovers a long, blonde hair on her husband’s jacket, and notices that he doesn’t finish work as late as he says. Things aren’t quite adding up. Naturally, she starts snooping around for some more information, visiting his office unexpectedly and searching through his phone for anything out of the ordinary.

This is a particularly frustrating process of mental turmoil to watch, as Gemma attempts to determine whether she is simply paranoid or if Simon is actually having an affair. Surrane Jones plays this role impeccably throughout the series, as if she is a ticking time bomb about to explode. Her behaviour becomes much more volatile as time goes on; she even threatens to burn a patient’s abusive boyfriend with a lit cigarette.

In each episode she learns more and more about her husband’s affair, finding his second phone, which is filled with photos of him and his young lover, who he has been in a relationship with for two years. Having learnt the devastating news that Simon’s new girlfriend, Kate, has fallen pregnant, her work life spirals out of control. Patients begin to complain about her behaviour, causing her to take a leave from work. Tension and anxiety continues to build, with Simon still completely unaware of his wife’s knowledge, leading perfectly into the final episode in the series.

This is an absolutely explosive episode. Sat around the dinner table with some friends, who are also the parents of her husband’s lover, Gemma reveals all for the first time – she discusses Simon’s affair, his financial problems and even the abortion that he thought nobody was aware of. In spite of his decision to stay with his new girlfriend, Gemma leaves with their son, an ordeal that will ultimately leave Simon scarred for life. This is an excruciating scene to watch, but completely worth it.

If you haven’t already watched Doctor Foster then what are you waiting for? With an amazing storyline, and even better acting from Jones, this is not something to miss out on. Be warned, though, you will be likely to grimace, smile, laugh and possible even cry – a huge range of emotions to experience in just a matter of hours.
