Review: Sane New World

The number one best-seller by comedian and TV presenter Ruby Wax is a book that will make you laugh and cry as the darkness of the human mind is explored in her trademark wit.

‘Sane New World’ comes after Wax studied mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) at Oxford University in the hope of understanding how her mind works and why it works the way it does. Wax’s curiosity sprouted from her battle with depression – the mental illness that effects every 1 in 5 people.

The book discusses the factors of depression, critical voices and other negative issues that the brain decides to dish out to us. It is not all doom and gloom, though as Wax does include lengthy steps to instruct the reader on how to overcome these issues.

If you are not depressed, that is fine as the book is for anyone wishing to understand the brain and how and why it works in specific ways. As well as this, Wax teaches the reader about MBCT and BCT (Behavior Cognitive Therapy) – two ways in which you can ‘tame your mind’; ultimately leading to positive thinking and a much more indulgent, self-regulating and peaceful way of living.

Wax has written the book intended for beginners and if you are looking for a book to get you started into reading about the functions of the mind, or simply wanting to begin practicing mindfulness or BCT, this is the perfect book for you.
