Cutting off Lionel Messi from his fifth win, Cristiano Ronaldo has won the Ballon d’Or award for the third time.

The 31-year-old is now just one more award away from Lionel Messi, who won last year, and from 2009 to 2012. Ronaldo helped Real Madrid win the Champions League and scored three goals in the Euro 2016, helping Portugal to secure its victory.

In numbers, Ronaldo had 42 games, 38 goals, 14 assists, and the third best minutes-per-goal rate (standing at 83.68). He also had a hand in 39 La Liga goals in 30 games. He scored 31 of them, and had nine assists.

The winner is decided by 173 journalists worldwide, and each of them vote for who they believe had the biggest impact this year in the sport. Ronaldo has had a superb year for his club.
