Every year, tens of thousands of people take part in the Great North Run, a whole 13.1 miles around Newcastle and surrounding areas. It is a great event, which raises huge amounts of money for a vast range of charities, large and small.

However, one runner has sadly passed away during this year’s event, as confirmed by the Great North Run online. Although no specific details have been reported, the event organisers have published a statement online, stating that they “deeply regret the loss of life of a participant”. They also made it clear to the public that “the next of kin are informed” and they “will update as soon as [they] are in a position to do so”.

This isn’t the first time that someone has passed during the run – in 2005, four runners died after collapsing within 3 miles of the finish line. The organisers had agreed to give better medical advice for future events, if something like this was to occur again.

Clearly, this is an incident which is completely unpredictable and extremely upsetting, and our thoughts are out to the family and friends of the runner in question. Hopefully nothing like this will ever happen again.
