Even after the grand success of 007’s Spectre, Star Wars has become the UK’s biggest film of 2015, reaching an estimated £94.06m in just 16 days.

JJ Abrams’s film has also overtaken the worldwide hit Avatar by James Cameron to become the second most successful in UK history – it reached only £94m. But while The Force Awakens has done exceptionally well, Spectre‘s predecessor Skyfall is still supreme ruler as the UK’s highest-grossing film of all time, with takings of a staggering £103m in 2012.

The reboot of the beloved franchise sees the return of some old faces, like Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill, while also introducing British actors Daisy Ridley and John Boyega.

By the end of December, Star Wars: The Force Awakens became the fastest film to ever take $1bn (£674m) at the global box office.

It achieved the feat in 12 days, beating yet another film Jurassic World, which took 13 days in June 2015.
