On Saturday the 9th, Star Wars: The Force Awakens was named movie of the year at the 25th MTV Movie Awards.

The film won three of the 11 awards it was nominated for, including breakthrough performance for Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver.

The reboot broke records for biggest box office opening – its current gross stands at $2.053bn.

Following 0n from his Oscar win in February, Leonardo DiCaprio won best male performance for his stunning performance in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s The Revenant.

Charlize Theron won best female for Mad Max: Fury Road, directed by original Mad Max director George Miller, and Chris Pratt picked up the award for best action performance for his role as Owen in Jurassic World.

Will Smith was given the MTV Generation award regarding his film career over the last two decades. Halle Berry, who presented the award, praised Will as “a champion for diversity in Hollywood.

“[He] blazes a path for actors by showing that someone of any colour can play any role, and can open any movie and win any award and be the biggest freaking movie star in the whole world.”

When accepting the award, Smith joked about the honour as “code for the old dude award”.

In a moment of heartfelt honesty, he added: “This is absolutely beautiful. I released my first record when I was 17. I’m 47 years old now. This June marks 30 years in this business.”

Ryan Reynolds won two awards; for best comedic performance, and for best fight sequence for Deadpool (which was actually rather good).

In other Star Wars news, the newest film has just been teased after its first official trailer.

Expectations are high after The Force Awakens, and we hope it’ll be worth the wait.
