Top Ten Songs of the ’80s

20 June 2018

By Lauren E. White

Here at b**p we love nothing more than a good throwback. And what better to throwback to than the glorious musical era of the 1980s? Answer: nothing. So, without further ado, here are our top ten songs of the ’80s, featuring Foreigner, Cher, Madonna, a-ha and many more.

    1. Like a Prayer, Madonna

Queen Madge deserves a spot on the top ten songs of the ‘80s without a doubt. And with the totally anthemic yet gospel and yet banging tune of Like a Prayer, she is here. Bow down.

    1. Summer of ’69, Bryan Adams

Head-banging and an absolute disco/karaoke classic is Bryan Adams’ Summer of ’69. Even if you weren’t alive in the ‘80s (or 1969), it makes you feel nostalgic. Just wow.

    1. Faith, George Michael

Good old George Michael never let us down with a tune. And his all-time, universally-loved Faith earns its place on our top ten songs of the ‘80s. Now everyone loves the shoulder popping of “well I guess it would be nice…”.

    1. I Want to Know What Love Is, Foreigner

One of our all-time favourite songs ever is Foreigner’s I Want to Know What Love Is. That smooth rock sound and the power of the chorus just touches us every time. We’re swaying just thinking about it.

    1. Islands in the Stream, Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers

Nothing is complete without a bit of Dolly and country, are we right or are we right? And Islands in the Stream has been a complete banger from day one. The lyrics are perfect, so is the guitar and so are those harmonies. I say, ‘Islands in the stream…’, you say, ‘That is what we are!’

    1. Take on Me, a-ha

Well worthy on our top ten songs of the ’80s list is, of course, the electro-pop all-time tune Take on Me. Everything about this song just gets us hyped, and it is undoubtedly one of the best masterpieces of the 1980s.

    1. I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles), The Proclaimers

You didn’t think we’d forgotten The Proclaimers did you? We could never do such a thing. And there’s nothing like a good old Scottish accent telling you how many bloody brilliant miles they’ll walk to be the man next to you.

    1. Super Trouper, ABBA

ABBA’s last ever UK number one has sneaked its way onto our list – and rightly so. It’s a bittersweet banger, and we love a bit of Swedish pop. Always have, always will.

    1. If I Could Turn Back Time, Cher

It just doesn’t matter how many times you listen to this song, Cher never gets old. If I Could Turn Back Time is one of those power ballads you could listen to on a desert island for the rest of your life and not get bored of.

    1. Hungry Eyes, Eric Carmen

And, finally, Hungry Eyes of course gets a place on our top ten songs of the ’80s. It’s beautifully romantic and it’s impossible to not sing along to. We love every single second of this ‘80s classic.

P.S. These songs are just one version of the top ten songs of the ‘80s. We’re not stupid enough to forget all of the work of Elton John, Michael Jackson, Queen, Sting, Journey, Yazoo, Bonnie Tyler, Lionel Richie and Men at Work. Ten is just a nice number. And our full playlist is four hours long.
