Track Review: Falling

Brand new duo Opia have burst onto the scene, with a sound reminiscent of The Weeknd’s early work, or like a really happy James Blake decided to experiment with swing. Recorded from a kitchen floor, reaching number three on Hypemachine and over 100,000 plays within a week on Soundcloud, comes Opia’s impressive debut track Falling. The duo is comprised of guitarist Cole Citernbaum and producer Jacob Reske, who met in Yale University while studying Physics and Maths respectively. So, not only are they talented musicians, they are clever as hell…

Opening deceptively quietly, Falling begins with strong vocals and muted instrumentals, before launching into swung rhythms led by Cole on guitar. Filled with silky harmonies and gritty bass, Falling crashes the jazz and electronic genres together creating (as Opia call it) electro-soul. Falling is a solid debut that promises more great things are to come from Opia.
