Tunes of the Week

19 December 2015

Free music! And of course new music is also making up the song picks this week:

‘Angels (feat. Saba)’ – Chance The Rapper, Saba

Chance shared his latest track on Soundcloud and iTunes as a free download and it’s definitely worth getting. It’s an upbeat song which sees Chance flowing, in his unique style, over jazzy rhythms. Rumours have been circulating the internet that ‘Angels (feat. Saba)’ is the first release off a new mixtape which Chance is working on. So keep your eyes out, because more music should be on the way.

‘Life’ – Sigma, Bartoven

‘Life’ is the title track, and one of the most stripped back songs on Sigma’s debut album. ‘Life’ is minimalistic with Bartoven singing over a bouncy synth for the majority of the song. The chorus hints that more is coming, as a deep bassline and simple clap join in; however, the song doesn’t build any more and so leaves a longing for drum and bass which the rest of the album delivers.

‘Bigger Man Sound – London Bars Vol. IV’ – Chase & Status, Novelist

Chase & Status dip back into production with their London Bars project, working with up-and-coming grime MCs such as Novelist who appears on this track. The result is a tense rap song: the beat continuously builds, increasingly incorporating electronic elements to create a dark, threatening sound.

‘ILYSB’ – LANY

LANY are a three-piece group from Los Angeles and ‘ILYSB’ is a (remastered) track off their debut EP Make Out. It is reminiscent of Passion Pit, complete with the heavy synth use and swooping vocals. ‘ILYSB’ explores the troubles of heartbreak in an upbeat way (even if this sounds strange), and it is the sort of song that rewards re-listeners. In 2016, LANY will be supporting Ellie Goulding on her UK tour, so they seem to be set for big things in the future!
