TV Review: Tyger Takes On

In the second series of BBC Three’s social commentary series Tyger Takes On, “eighteen-and-three-quarter-year-old” Tyger Drew-Honey (Outnumbered‘s Jake) will make his way around the country looking at various issues in modern Britain. In the first episode, he challenges his sexuality and examines alternative sexualities and gender forms. From Brighton to Aberdeenshire, he looks at the way that attitudes have progressed over the years, to the point where labels are starting to be discarded entirely.

It’s certainly an interesting idea, and the programme’s researchers have certainly managed to track down some very interesting characters and have recorded the kind of vox pops that restore one’s faith in humanity somewhat. Drew-Honey, however, gives all the signs of being seriously uncomfortable with every single event, and manages to make the whole thing uncomfortable with his toe-curling voice-over full of immature humour. He is, however, by and large a confident interviewer who manages to get the best out of all of the weird and wonderful people he talks to – men, women and everything in between. The most entertaining aspect of the programme, however, seems to be the appearance of Simon Honey (better known as the pornographic actor Ben Dover and Drew-Honey’s father) who provides commentary on his son’s adventures from his own unique perspective.
