At least 17 people have been killed in a school shooting in Florida after an expelled student opened fire at a high school campus in Parkland.

The suspect was Nikolas Cruz, a former student who had been expelled. He escaped with fleeing students but is now in custody. As the attack unfolded, students were urged to hide as police entered the building and swept the area for the suspect.

This marks the deadliest shooting since 26 people were killed at Connecticut school Sandy hook in 2012. It is the sixth school shooting this year so far that has wounded or killed students. Last year, the deadliest shooting ever recorded took place in Las Vegas, when a man opened fire on a music festival from a hotel window. 50 people were killed.

The attack began at 14:30 (19:30 GMT) on Wednesday at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Highschool in Parkland. The local school district tweeted that students had ‘heard what sounded like gunfire’ just before the end of the day.

Witnesses said that the suspect had set off the fire alarm before he began shooting.

Swat teams moved onto the campus and began clearing students from the school as parents converged on the scene.

The shooter used an AR-15, which he purchased legally and kept hidden in his house.

Sheriff Scott Israel told media that the expelled student killed three people outside before entering the building, claiming 12 more lives.

‘We have already begun to dissect his websites and things on social media that he was on and some of the things… are very, very disturbing.’

Just another day in America.

But no, now totally isn’t the time to discuss tighter gun laws.
