Victory for Marine Le Pen

In a similar way to President Trump’s victory in the US, it looks as though France could be about to elect its own underdog as president.

Marine Le Pen, leader of the National Front, has made it through to the second stage of the French elections and she now only has to beat Macron, leader of En Marche! and the current leader in the polls. Francois Hollande, the current president of France and leader of the Socialist Party, has set the record for the lowest approval rating of any French president. His current rating is just 4% which of course had a huge impact on this year’s Socialist Party candidate, Benoît Hamon, who finished fifth after the voting yesterday.

France should begin to prepare itself to have a far right president and the EU should also be thinking long and hard about the future of France. Le Pen and the National Front are a well known euro-sceptic party and Le Pen plans to hold a referendum over France’s EU membership if she is elected. She has disagreed with the Schengen agreement for years and in light of the relentless terrorist attacks in France and the refugee crisis, many French people now agree with her stance.

We won’t know for sure until the 7th of May but as we’ve learnt from Brexit and the US election, never dismiss the underdog.
