Music fans from the region and beyond will descend on Newcastle this weekend as the Radio 6 Music Festival kicks off tonight at the O2 Academy. A fine selection of bands, around 50 in total will be playing at various venues around Gateshead and Newcastle over the next couple of days.

The prestigious Sage on the banks of the Tyne will see the likes of Jungle, Hot Chip and Maximo Park take to the stage. While campaigners are keen to get Radio 1’s Big Weekend to pay a visit to the area, it would appear the powers that be at the beeb are already paying  attention with the Radio 6 Music Festival in town.
