Wills and Kate Expecting Baby Number Three

4 September 2017

By Lauren E. White

Kensington Palace announced this morning that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expecting their third child.

The palace said that the Queen and members of both families are “delighted” with the news.

As with Kate’s previous two pregnancies with Prince George and Princess Charlotte, she is suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum, an extreme form of morning sickness that affects around one in every 200 pregnancies. In the past, this has led to the couple announcing their baby news before the 12-week mark, so it is possible that the precedent has been followed this time around too.

Due to Kate’s illness, she will miss out on a royal engagement at Hornsey Road Children’s Centre in London today. Kensington Palace said she is being cared for at home.

Undoubtedly people are already speculating on the sex of the new royal baby and usually, we’d say that is irrelevant. After all, all babies should be loved the same, regardless of their sex. However, if this baby is to be a boy, it will create history after the Queen brought in a new rule in March 2015 that prevents male heirs to the throne succeeding females regardless of the order in which they were born. Because of this, if there is a new prince, he will fall behind Princess Charlotte in the line of succession.

We send our congratulations to the Duke and Duchess – and to all those who have recently discovered similar news themselves.
