Taylor Swift won an astonishing eight out of the fourteen categories she was nominated for dominating the Billboard Music Awards. The 25 year old won awards for Best Female artist, Best Streaming song for her number one track ‘Shake it Off’ and Artist of the Year.

English singer and songwriter Sam Smith won the award for Best New Artist but couldn’t make the event due to just having vocal surgery. He accepted the award with flash cards and sent his acceptance speech in a video message.

He held up a series of cards, reading: “Thank you Billboard for this incredible honour. Secondly, thank you to my amazing fans. It’s times like this that I realise how lucky I am to have you in my life. I can’t wait to get this surgery out of the way so I can sing my ass off for you again.”
