World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day takes place on December 1st every year to shed light on the disease. Currently, around 100,000 people are living with HIV in the UK. 34 million people worldwide are living with HIV and 35 million people have died from the virus. Many people are unaware of the true facts around AIDS.

  • HIV can be transmitted through sex, blood transfusions, sharing of needles and by a mother and her baby during pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding.
  • HIV is the world’s leading infectious killer.
  • HIV isn’t passed through using the same cutlery as an infected person, nor can you catch it from sitting on a toilet seat
  • An estimated 3.2 million children are living with the disease around the world.
  • There is no vaccine and no cure for HIV
  • You can be tested for HIV now using a sample of saliva and you can find out results for HIV tests in just 20-25 minutes.

 

These are just some of the startling facts surrounding this deadly disease.
