Controversial rapper XXXTentacion has been shot and killed after leaving a motorcycle dealership in south Florida on Monday. Police stated he was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

He was facing domestic violence charges at the time. He was hailed by many in the rap community to be a breakthrough talent, with numerous artists showing support in the wake of his passing. Real name Jahseh Onfroy, was leaving the dealership shortly before 16:00 local time, before being assailed by two armed suspects.

At least one of them shot him before fleeing the scene in Deerfield Beach, in a dark-coloured SUV. Investigators say it could have been a ‘possible robbery’. A video posted to social media showed Onfroy slumped in his car.

The rapper debuted in August last year, with 17, with the follow-up ‘?’ releasing in March. It has since been played hundreds of millions of times online.

His career was tarnished by allegations of domestic violence, having 15 felony charges at the time of his death. One of these included the aggravated battery of a pregnant woman.

Kanye West tweeted saying:

Even Louis Theroux, the famous documentary maker, said:

‘Notwithstanding personal demons, he was a huge talent & bringing a beautiful new feel to hip hop. So sad.’

A polarising figure in music, but not the only rapper of his ilk to meet an untimely death. Lil’ Peep died last year in November and made similar music. XXXTentacion will join him on the short list of artists we lost too soon.

This song seems quite appropriate.
