#YEAR10PROBLEMS

The Fear

As the first edition of this column, it took a great deal of time to pick a good topic to talk about. But (eventually) I settled on ‘The Fear’.

Usually, I’d be a little more reserved when discussing ‘fear,’ but, seeing as so many people are in the exact same boat, why not open up?

School has started again this September and many of us were expected to answer the somewhat patronising question, ‘Did everyone enjoy their summer holidays?’ and of course, we responded automatically with a ‘yes’ alongside a groan. Ugh. So, we’ve entered the school gates again, some for the first time, with majority of us absolutely dreading the year ahead while some of us (I have to say this one includes me) are looking forward to another year of school.

But this whole year it’s going to be different. This year we’re walking into courses and exams and stress – something we are used to on a much smaller scale, when the worst work doesn’t really matter. This year things matter because everything is bigger and that ultimately means things are much more frightening.

Pretty much everyone was nervous when they received their timetables too because what were we supposed to expect? There has already be a few that question if they’ll make it through the year and of course the cocky one who claims they’re ready as they’ll ever be… yeah right.

The truth is, we’re frightened of going into the unknown and I think we have every right to be as well. With the possibility of new teachers along with new classes, new people and different lessons, the main emotion we are feeling at the very beginning of Year Ten is by far fear.

Despite all of this, though, I am sure that it will be like every other year once we’re into the swing of things. Once we are used to the teachers, classes and people, we’ll be fine… I hope. There’s nothing like that feeling of utter anxiety before the start of something you care about, is there? So, if you ever find yourself worried about walking through the doors after an unnaturally early start to the day, here’s a song  that might help ease some of your nerves. Good luck for the rest of this year and see you next week.

Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You) – Kelly Clarkson

Although it may be a little cheesy, this song is so motivational and listening to it before you walk through those school doors will give you the confidence boost you need in order to succeed.
