#YEAR11PROBLEMS

29 March 2016

Female superheroes

Much of mainstream sci-fi and action-adventure is dominated by male heroes and leaders with the role of women as either the girlfriend or damsel in distress.

Of course, WonderWoman and the like exist, but they are consistently undermined by the costumes they wear. For example, compare how much skin (I know, bear with) WonderWoman shows when compared with Spider-Man, Super Man or Bat Man. The female superheroes that have been created are created for (and most likely in) the eyes of a white, heterosexual man.

My problem does not lie with the fact that female heroes show skin, it’s that you never see the male heroes doing the same thing.

It’s the kind of example that is set to young people, too. It’s thoroughly saddening to see that young girls are set the example of either a weak girlfriend or a hero good for only being half-naked.

Women have to start being properly represented in mainstream film so that young girls can see that there is no limit to what they can achieve.
