Your Uni Checklist

So, you’ve received your offer from uni and you’re already counting down the days until you can move in. However, there’s a lot to prepare for. To make your life a little bit easier, we’ve prepared a checklist of everything you could possibly need. Don’t worry, it may be quite long and look a bit daunting, but it’s not as bad as it looks.

  • Important documents – When you’re moving away from home, you probably don’t think about all of the boring stuff like paperwork and bank details. However, they’re probably the most important items to consider, especially if you’re moving far away. For example, passport photos, some ID, your National Insurance number, exam certificates, and bank account details.

  • Essentials for your new home – Stepping out of your comfort zone can be difficult, especially in a new area, so making it feel more like home can really help. You’ll definitely want to take some essentials with you, such as bedding, cooking utensils, and so on. As well as this, you may also want to take a few of your favourite personal belongings with you, such as a photo frame with your favourite photo in it, or something else that makes you smile.

  • Books, books and more books – Chances are, you’re probably going to be doing a lot of reading while you’re at uni so stocking up on some books is definitely a good idea. Though, remember that your university library should have some copies of more expensive books, so don’t worry about spending hundreds of pounds if it’s not necessary. Of course, along with this, there are many other essentials for your studies, including pens, notebooks, and folders.

  • A diary/planner – This is an important one. You’ll have a lot going on when you go to uni, whether it’s lectures, tutorials, meeting up with new friends, and so on. You have to be organised, and a diary or a planner can be really useful for this.

  • Healthcare – A lot of people fall ill when they go to university, so it’s important to be stocked up on healthcare. This includes painkillers, any prescription medication, condoms and a basic first aid kit. You’ll be surprised at how often you may have to re-stock on these items, as you never know what can happen in a new and exciting environment. You may also want to think about changing doctors if you’re moving far from home, in order to ensure that nothing goes dangerously wrong.

  • Clothes – This may seem like an obvious one, but you’ll have to think about what clothing you take a little bit more than you may want to. You probably won’t have a huge wardrobe space at uni, so you’re going to have to be picky. It may be a good idea to only take seasonal clothes with you when you first move in, and swap some over when you next travel home – that way, you’ll have enough space for the clothes you actually want to wear rather than every single item you own.

  • Food – Again, this is probably an obvious one, but food is clearly an essential. Of course, you can buy plenty while you’re at your accommodation but it may be useful to stock up before you go. For example, buy basic foods that will last in bulk, such as pasta, tinned items, and so on.

So, there you go. There are a number of other items that you could take with you, but these are just the essentials.
