A 15-year-old girl has tragically lost her life after being swept into the sea at Cullercoats Bay, North Tyneside, on Saturday night.

After suffering a cardiac arrest, the young girl passed away at Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in Cramlington, Northumberland, later that night.

Three other teenagers who were also present at the time of the incident were taken to hospital as a precaution but are uninjured.

A huge rescue operation was launched at approximately 8pm on Saturday night, with a RNLI lifeboat, a Coastguard rescue helicopter and police called to the scene. The teenager was eventually rescued by a member of the public.

Cullercoats Bay is a popular destination where many teenagers spend their evenings, but very few are fully aware of the dangers of the rough and freezing cold sea. A local resident commented that “it was minus 2°C, but once you get out on the front it was just bitterly, bitterly cold.” Northumbria police officers at the scene also described the sea as “running high”.

This is a very unfortunate incident, and our thoughts are with the girl’s friends and family.
